Define the procedure envelope
A welding procedure specification (WPS) defines process, consumable, joint preparation, preheat, interpass temperature and heat input. Qualification evidence must cover the production application under the project’s welding rules.
Manage cracking and toughness
Assess plate chemistry, thickness, joint restraint and hydrogen control together. Store and handle consumables to the manufacturer’s requirements; control moisture and surface contamination. Heat input affects cooling and heat-affected-zone properties, particularly on thermomechanically processed material.
Verify the joint
Inspect fit-up before welding, retain welder and procedure traceability, and apply the agreed nondestructive testing. Fatigue performance depends strongly on detail geometry and workmanship. Higher base-metal yield strength does not automatically improve a welded detail’s fatigue category.
Information to record
- Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
- Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
- Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.
Frequently asked questions
Can I copy the preheat value from another grade’s data sheet?
No. Have the welding engineer establish the value from the qualified procedure and actual production conditions.
