Surface defects, lamination and inspection of ship plate

Visual inspection, thickness measurement and ultrasonic examination detect different conditions. Define acceptance before deciding whether a plate can be repaired or used.

Receiving inspection

Check plate identity, dimensions, edge damage, scale, pitting and visible discontinuities. Record defect location, length, depth and photographs. Remove only enough scale to inspect without concealing the original condition or reducing thickness below the limit.

Internal quality

Ultrasonic testing can assess internal discontinuities but requires an agreed standard, coverage, sensitivity and acceptance level. A visual pass cannot exclude lamination. A routine mill certificate does not necessarily mean every plate has been ultrasonically examined.

Repair decisions

Grinding or weld repair must comply with the applicable rule and approval process. Recheck remaining thickness and repaired areas. Traceable nonconformance records should show the original indication, disposition, repair procedure and final inspection.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Can all visible defects be ground out?

No. Defect type, depth, remaining thickness and applicable acceptance limits determine whether grinding is permitted.
