Prepare the cutting plan

Record the mother-plate ID, heat number, drawing revision, cutting method, kerf allowance and part nesting. Protect test coupons and agreed remnants. Make required survey or marking-transfer arrangements before cutting the certificate-marked portion away.

Control cut edges

Thermal cutting creates a heat-affected zone and can introduce hardness, distortion or edge defects. Check the specified cut quality, grind or machine where required, and use the qualified procedure for critical details. Do not specify a universal heat-treatment recipe for all cut edges.

Drill and inspect

Choose tooling, feeds, cooling and clamping appropriate to the material and thickness. Check hole location, diameter, burrs and edge distances against the drawing. Reconcile part IDs and inspection records with the certificate before dispatch.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cut piece automatically retain the original class certificate?

Its origin must remain traceable and marking transfer must meet the project and class requirements. A photocopy alone does not prove identity.
