Define the exposure
Ballast tanks, splash zones, weather decks and submerged hull surfaces face different conditions. Coating selection depends on preparation, immersion, abrasion and the applicable owner and regulatory requirements. Corrosion allowance is a design provision, not extra strength to spend during fabrication.
Control application
Agree surface-cleanliness, profile, soluble-salt checks, environmental conditions, dry-film thickness and curing. Verify compatibility of shop primer with welding and the final coating system. A coating colour does not identify a steel grade or prove corrosion performance.
Maintain in service
Inspect coating breakdown, pits and thickness loss through a documented survey plan. Repair coatings and corrosion damage using approved procedures. Do not estimate remaining service life from nominal original thickness alone; the damage pattern and survey criteria matter.
Information to record
- Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
- Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
- Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.
Frequently asked questions
Does selecting EH36 remove the need for a coating?
No. Low-temperature impact category and corrosion protection are separate requirements.
