Plate flatness, weld distortion and dimensional control

Distinguish mill plate flatness from distortion introduced by cutting, forming and welding. They have different acceptance criteria and corrective actions.

Diagnose the source

Record the plate condition before fabrication. Residual stress release, uneven cutting, asymmetric welds and restraint can change shape. A warped component is not automatically evidence that the original mill plate failed its dimensional standard.

Plan prevention

Use balanced cutting and welding sequences, suitable restraint, controlled heat input and inspection at intermediate stages. Nesting, assembly order and joint design can matter as much as the plate grade. Keep the procedure consistent with qualified fabrication requirements.

Approve corrections

Mechanical straightening and local heating can affect material properties. Document permitted methods and re-inspection criteria, especially for TMCP and low-temperature grades. Check the completed assembly against the drawing and shipbuilding quality standard.

Information to record

  • Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
  • Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
  • Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.

Frequently asked questions

Will thicker plate eliminate distortion?

No. Thickness changes stiffness and thermal response but does not remove residual-stress and fabrication effects.
