Design inputs
The structural engineer considers loads, spans, stiffener arrangement, buckling, fatigue and class rules. Net structural thickness and corrosion addition must be distinguished. Higher-strength steel may permit changes to yielding checks without solving buckling or stiffness limits.
From drawing to order
Translate approved gross thickness into ordered nominal thickness and its accepted tolerance. Coordinate plate width, length and nesting with weld locations and handling limits. Never reduce plate thickness solely because the proposed grade has higher yield strength.
Changes and repairs
Material substitutions, local inserts and renewal thicknesses need the responsible design and class acceptance. Surveyed remaining thickness should be assessed under the applicable in-service criteria, not simply compared with a generic catalogue thickness.
Information to record
- Exact product standard and edition; approved drawing or specification revision.
- Grade, dimensions, final condition and heat-to-piece traceability.
- Acceptance test, inspection document and responsible approving party.
Frequently asked questions
Can a weight calculator choose safe hull thickness?
No. The calculator estimates mass; it does not check structural adequacy.
